TransAm kit

TransAm kit

By popular request (well, Scott asked anyway….), here is a list of everything I wore/carried on the TransAm:

  • Kali Tava aero-road helmet
  • Oakley Pro M-frames, with dark and clear lenses
  • Sidi Wire SP shoes
  • Castelli custom San Remo suit
  • Castelli Velo vest
  • Castelli custom aero gloves
  • Castelli custom thermoflex kneewarmers
  • Castelli custom thermoflex armwarmers
  • Castelli UV sleeves
  • Castelli Idro jacket
  • Castelli Tempesta gloves
  • Smartwool undershirt
  • Pearl Izumi sleeveless baselayer
  • Suunto heartrate monitor
  • DeFeet socks
  • Cotton cycling cap
  • Pearl Izumi WXB overshoes
  • Bose sport headphones
  • Hiplock minimal ziptie lock
  • Plastic bowl
  • Plastic knife and spoon, tiny can opener
  • Vegan protein powder
  • SOL emergency bivvy bag
  • Spare socks
  • SPOT tracker
  • Hand sanitiser
  • Sun screen
  • SPF lip balm
  • Chamois cream
  • Toothbrush/toothpaste
  • Vitamins, ibuprofen
  • 4 USB adapters and charging cables for lights, ipod, phone, eTap
  • 2 spare tubes
  • Multi-tool, Dynaplugs, glueless patches, duct tape
  • Silca NFS lube
  • Silca Tattico mini-pump (on bike)
  • 3 English Cycles large waterbottles (on bike)
  • Exposure Link Plus helmet mounted front/rear light (Strada 800 and Blaze on the bike)
  • Apple iPod Touch
  • Verizon cell phone
  • Adventure Cycling TransAm maps

And that is it! I was going to carry a spare tire (pictured), but when I took the tires off to install a fresh set for the race, I was so impressed with how the Schwalbe Pro Ones had held up in training that I decided having the dynaplugs, patches and spare tubes would be sufficient to get me to a bike shop if a major tire problem occurred.

I ended up only using the wool baselayer – it never got that hot on the days that I was riding; I only took the knee warmers off once too I think. I had the second, thinner base layer to avoid getting sunburnt through the mesh in the San Remo suit. Didn’t need the spare socks either, but those might have been nice had it rained……

My kit selection was pretty good – I used almost everything, and was (just!) warm enough the whole time – a little shivery when it was 37 degrees coming down the McKenzie pass, but otherwise fine.
