John’s super-commuter ebike

I built John a road bike a while back – this time around he asked for a similar fitting and riding bike, but with larger tires (40mm), full fenders. Oh, and an electric assist….. The other ask was to have everything completely integrated, so with this build that meant the motor controller fitted into the toptube, the lights wired into the Bosch motor system, with the switch ported up through the stem to be within reach on the bars, and the Shimano Alfine motor unit pulling power from the main battery.

John wanted to run a full framebag, which meant maintaining a complete front triangle. To get there, the seattube is offset forward to allow the battery to fit behind it, before heading back to a normal angle to complete the integrated seatmast.

The motor is the Bosch Speed unit that will provide assistance up to 28mph, which can really make a significant time difference with a longer commute. To help keep things efficient, the bike has fast rolling Schwalbe G-one tires mounted to Reserve aero wheels.
