Eric’s aero road bike

Eric is a tall bike racer, and despite constant tinkering, had been unable to achieve the forward-aero position he wanted for the best biomechanical and aerodynamic efficiency and performance. But he knew where he needed the saddle and handlebars to land to put him in that position – so I could then join the dots to make that possible, created with a geometry to match the resulting weight distribution and Eric’s riding style.

The result is a long bike – a 617mm toptube with a 130mm stem, paired with a relatively steep 74.5deg seattube angle. The frame uses mostly Columbus tubing, with an aero downtube, short taper oversize chainstays and a custom ovalised toptube. A 44mm headtube and T47 BB provide room for the full internal hose routing, through the Enve In-Route system (with the headset bearings upgraded to CeramicSpeed SLT to eliminate maintenance).

The build is rounded out with the fast Enve SES 6.7 wheels, an Ultegra/Dura-ace groupset and Enve finishing kit. Beautiful paint by Colorworks, and the final weight comes in at 18.7lbs.

The bike; just incredible. The feeling and sensations I had riding it were things I thought were possible, but they were always just out of my grasp. I constantly tweaked and adjusted my other bikes, but for every change, there was always a compromise. With this bike, everything fell into place.

I have never been able to get into my aero position so comfortably while also maintaining the weight balance of the bike. The handling is the best I’ve ever had on a road bike. And, this bike absolutely responds when I stomp on the pedals. I did 636 watts for 1 minute on a short local “climb”, which is my all time 1 minute PR. The bike was rock solid the whole time and definitely worked with me. This is probably an extreme case of New Bike Watts, but I do also think that the bike was made for me had something to do with it.
